인도-영국 영어에서 카나라 또는 카나라라고도 알려진 카아라발레인도의 남서쪽 해안에서 현재의 인도 카르나타카 주의 아라비아 해와 나란히 위치한 역사적으로 중요한 땅이다.[1] 이 지역은 세 개의 시민 구역으로 구성되어 있다. 우타라 칸나다, 우두피, 닭시나 칸나다.[3]

어원

역사학자 세베리노 다 실바에 따르면 이 지역의 고대 이름은 파라슈라마 스루시티(Parashurama의 창조)[4] 그와 스티븐 푸치에 따르면, 카나라라는 이름은 16세기 초부터 무역을 위해 이 지역을 방문포르투갈인, 네덜란드인, 그리고 영국인들의 발명품이다. 베드노레 왕조는 당시 이 트랙이 누구의 통치하에 있었는지 그들에게는 칸나다 왕조, 즉 칸나다어를 사용하는 왕조로 알려져 있었다. '코스트'를 뜻하는 칸나다어 '카라발리'는 칸나다 화자들이 이 지역을 지칭하기 위해 사용하는 말이다.[5] 'd'라는 글자는 항상 유럽인들이 'r'처럼 발음하는 것으로, 그들에 의해 '카나라'(카나다라는 단어의 부패)라는 이름이 붙여졌다. 이 이름은 1799년 영국인들이 이 지역을 점령한 후 유지되었고, 그 이후로도 계속 남아 있다. 하지만 이들은 이 문제가 논란이 되고 있다고도 말한다.[5]

역사

고대부터 카나라 해안(현재는 '카나라'로 표기)의 많은 부분이 툴루 나두라고 알려진 문화적으로 뚜렷한 지역을 차지하고 있었다.[6] 역사적으로 툴루 나두는 북쪽의 캉가발리 강과 남쪽의 찬드라기리사이에 놓여 있었다.[7] 현재 툴루 나두는 카르나타카 주의 우두피와 닭시나 칸나다 지구, 케랄라카사라고드 탈루카 지구로 구성되어 있다.[8] 우타라칸나다 지구는 일반적으로 콘칸 해안의 최남단으로 여겨진다.[9] 구체적으로는 캉가발리 강 북부의 연근 지역은 전통적으로 콘칸에 포함되어 있다.[10]

포르투갈인은 1498-1763년에 카나라를 점령했다. 이 시기 카나라의 지리적 범위는 북쪽의 카르와르 칼리 강 남쪽 둑에서 남쪽의 카사라고드 찬드라기리 강 북쪽 둑까지 뻗어 있었다.[11]

제4차 마이소어 전쟁이 끝난 후인 1799년 영국이 이 지역을 점령하고 마드라스 대통령 선거구의 카나라 지구를 세웠다. 그 지역은 1859년에 남북 카나라 지역으로 분리되었다.[12] 북카나라(때로는 '북카나라'라고도 함) 지역은 봄베이 대통령 선거구로 이관되었고, 남카나라(때로는 '남카나라'라고도 함) 지역은 마드라스 대통령 선거의 관할로 남아 있었다. 남카나라는 현대 우두피, 닭시나 칸나다, 카사라고드 지구의 분할되지 않은 영토를 아우르고 있었다.[12]

1947년 인도가 독립한 후 봄베이 대통령직봄베이 주(州)로 재구성되었다. 1956년 국가재편법에 따라 봄베이 주의 남부는 마이소레 주에 추가되었고, 1972년 카르나타카로 개칭되었다. 카사라고드는 케랄라에 포함되었다.[13] 이후 남북카나라는 각각 우타라 칸나다와 닥시나 칸나다로 개명했다. 1997년에 우두피 지역은 더 큰 닭시나 칸나다 지구에서 조각되었다.[13]

지리

카나라 지역은 반도의 남서쪽에 위치한 카르나타카 해안을 형성하고 있다.[14] 카르나타카 해안(Carnataka)은 말라바르 해안의 북쪽 부분을 형성한다.[2] 카나라는 약 1만 평방 킬로미터(4,000 평방 마일)의 면적을 이루고 있다.[15] 북쪽으로는 곤칸, 동쪽으로는 서가트, 남쪽으로는 케랄라 평원, 서쪽으로는 아라비아 해와 경계를 이룬다.[16] 북쪽에서 남쪽으로 약 225km(140마일) 정도 뻗어 있으며, 남쪽에서 최대 64km(40마일)의 폭을 가지고 있다.[17]
