배경

1910년 일본-영국 전시회의 광고는 일본 문화뿐만 아니라 영국 내 일본 커뮤니티에 대한 인식을 높이기 위한 것이었다.

역사와 결산

정착은 19세기 후반에 일본인 전문가, 학생, 그리고 그들의 하인들이 도착하면서 처음 시작되었다. 일본의 시민 264명이 1884년에 영국에 거주했고, 그들 중 대다수는 관료와 학생으로 확인되었다.[2] 1900년대 초 고용은 20세기 초엽까지 500명을 돌파한 일본 사회의 성장과 함께 다양해졌다.[2]

제2차 세계 대전으로 치닫는 과정에서 일본과 영국 사이에 긴장이 고조되자, 몇몇 일본인들은 고국을 떠나 영국에 정착했고, 많은 일본인들은 일본으로 돌아갔다. 1941년 12월 일본의 진주만 공격홍콩에 대한 공격 이후, 외국인 사업가, 상선 선원 등 114명의 일본인이 맨섬에 적국 외국인으로 억류되었다.[3]

전후 시대에는 1960년대에 주로 사업과 경제 목적으로 이민의 새로운 물결이 일어났다. 최근 수십 년 동안 이민자, 학생, 사업가 등 이 숫자가 증가했다. 일본 외무성은 2014년 영국에는[1] 일본인이 67,258명이 거주하고 있는 것으로 추정했다. 세계 다른 닛케이 지역 사회와 달리, 영국인들은 이세이니세이, 산세이와 같은 세대적 관점에서 그들의 공동체를 전통적인 방식으로 표현하지 않는다.[4]

학생들

영국의 일본 학생들은 19세기에 도착했고, 조슈사쓰마 도메인들에 의해 런던대학으로 유학을 보냈고, 그 다음 바쿠푸(쇼그누스)가 공부했다. 후에 많은 사람들은 케임브리지 대학에서 공부했고, 소수의 사람들은 메이지 시대 말까지 옥스퍼드 대학에서 공부했다. 이들을 보낸 이유는 일본을 현대화함으로써 서양을 따라잡기 위해서였다. 1980년대 이후, 영국의 일본 학생들은 저렴한 항공 여행 덕분에 흔해졌다.

인구통계학

영국의 일부 지역, 특히 런던은 북런던골더스 그린이스트 핀슐리와 같은 상당한 일본인 인구를 가지고 있다. 더비셔는 도요타 공장으로 일본 인구가 상당하며, 아이치 도요타와 쌍둥이를 이루고 있다.[5] 마찬가지로 텔포드는 수많은 일본 기업의 본거지다.[6]

2001년 영국 인구조사에 따르면 영국에는 일본인 출생자가 3만7535명이 거주하고 있었으며 일본 외무성은 2002년 5만864명이 영국을 본국으로 부르고 있었던 것으로 추정하고 있다.[7][8] 2011년 인구조사에서 영국에서는 3만5,313명이 출생 국가를 일본, 웨일스 601명,[9] 스코틀랜드[10] 1273명, 북아일랜드 144명으로 특정했다.[11] 잉글랜드와 웨일스에 사는 3만5043명이 민족문제, 스코틀랜드 1245명,[12][13] 북아일랜드 90명 등의 응답으로 일본어로 쓰기를 선택했다.[14] 통계청은 2015년 일본에서 태어난 4만3000명이 영국에 거주한 것으로 추산하고 있다.[15]

일본어가 일본의 제1언어인데 2011년 인구조사에서 영국과 웨일스의 2만7764명이 일본어를 주언어로 사용했고, 이 중 영국에서만 2만7305명이, 런던에서만 1만7050명이 일본어를 사용했다고 밝혔다.[16]

2011년 인구 조사에서도 북아일랜드에서 83명이 일본어를 주 언어로 사용하는 것으로 나타났다.[17]

교육

초등학교와 중학교

영국의 많은 주와 독립 학교들은 일본 아이들을 위해 봉사한다. 2013년 현재 영국 내 일본 학령기 거주자의 약 10~20%가 일본 교육과정 기반의 국제학교에 다니고 있다.[21] 이들 학교에는 런던의 일본학교, 영국기숙학교릭쿄학교, 영국의 테이쿄학교 등이 있다.[22]

서퍽 시텐노지 학교는 1985년부터 폐교일인 [23]2000년 7월 17일까지 운영되었다.[24] 밀턴 케인즈교세이 국제학교는 운영 15년 만인 2002년에 문을 닫았다.[25]

중등 후 교육

데이쿄 학교는 더럼 대학라파디오 허언 문화 센터에 더럼에 일본 데이쿄 대학을 유지하고 있다.[22]

햄프셔주 윈체스터에 있는 기숙대학, 윈체스터대학의 윈체스터 슈이대학(옛 킹알프레드대학의 슈이센터)은 슈이 가쿠인의 계열사다. 1982년에 개관하였다.[26][27]

영국의 교세이 국제대학은 1989년 버크셔레딩에서 이전에 리딩대학이 관리하던 땅에 문을 열었고, 그 이름은 후에 위탄 국제대학으로 바뀌었다. 2004년에 독서대학은 위탄대학을 장악했다고 발표했다.[28]
