역사
1348년부터 1391년까지 이 섬들은 무자파리드 왕조하에 있었다. 1391년, 구자라트 술탄국 성립 직후, 무자파르 샤 1세는 북쪽 콘칸의 총독으로 임명되었다.[1] 봄베이 섬의 행정부를 위해 그는 곧 마힘의 총독을 임명했다. 아흐마드 샤 1세 (1411–1443) 통치 기간 동안 말리쿠스 샤르크는 마힘의 총독으로 임명되었고, 그는 기존의 수입 제도를 개선하였다. 14세기 초, 반다리스는 술탄국으로부터 마힘 섬을 빼앗고 8년간 통치했다.[2] 그러나 곧 구자라트 술탄국(Gujarat 술탄국)의 라이 큐트브(Rai Qutb)에 의해 재조명되었다.[3] 페르시아 역사학자 피리쉬타는 1429년까지 구자라트 술탄국 정부의 자리가 타네에서 봄베이(마힘)로 옮겨졌다고 기록하였다.[4] 1429–1430년 라이 콰트브가 사망하자, 데칸의 바마니 술탄국의 아흐마드 샤 1세 왈리는 살셋과 마힘의 포획에 성공했다.[5][6]
아흐마드 샤 1세는 아들 자파르 칸을 보내 잃어버린 영토를 탈환하게 함으로써 보복을 했는데, 자파 칸은 그와 아흐마드 샤 1세 왈리의 전투에서 승리한 것으로 나타났다. 1431년 마힘은 구자라트의 술탄국에 의해 탈환되었다.[6] 몇 년 후 마힘 쿠트브 칸의 사망에 대한 구자라트 특공대에 대해 아흐마드 샤 1세 왈리는 다시 대군을 급파하여 마힘을 사로잡았다. 이에 아흐마드 샤 1세는 자파르 칸 휘하의 거대한 육해군을 격하시켰다. 이 전투에서 아흐마드 샤 1세의 패배는 바마니 술탄국가의 모든 공격으로부터 봄베이의 자유를 증명했다.[3] 구자라트 술탄국가의 후원은 많은 이슬람 사원을 건설하게 되었는데, 1431년 이슬람 성직자 하지 알리가 지은 하지 알리 다르가가 두드러진다.[7][8] 후에, 이 섬들은 구자라트 술탄국의 바하두르 칸 길라니 밑에 들어갔다.[9] 1491–1494년 동안 봄베이는 바하마니 장군 마흐무드 가반에 의해 길라니의 지배에서 탈취되었다.[10] 1508년 포르투갈 탐험가 프란시스코 데 알메이다의 배는 섬의 깊은 자연 항구로 항해했고 그는 그것을 봄바이야(Good Bay)라고 불렀다.[11] 그러나 포르투갈인들은 1509년 1월 21일 반드라 강에서 구자라트 바지선을 나포한 후 마힘에 상륙했을 때 봄베이 섬을 처음 방문했다.[12] 봄베이에서 구자라트 술탄국의 잇단 공격 후, 이 섬들은 마흐무드 가반으로부터 술탄 바하두르 샤에 의해 탈환되었다.[9]
1526년 포르투갈인은 바세인(Bassein)[13] 1528–1529년, 로포 바즈 데 삼파요가 구자라트 술탄국으로부터 마힘 요새를 점령했는데, 이때 왕은 봄베이 남쪽 마을인 처우 영주 니잠울크와 전쟁을 벌이고 있었다.[14][15] 바하두르 샤는 무굴 황제 후마윤의 권력에 대해 염려하게 되었고 1534년 포르투갈인과 디우 조약에 서명할 의무가 생겼다. 이 조약에 따라 봄베이 섬과 바세인 섬은 포르투갈인들에게 제공되었다.[16] 그러나 바세인과 7개 섬은 1535년 10월 25일 바하두르 샤와 누노 다 쿠냐 사이의 평화와 상업 조약에 의해 항복되었다.[17]
