그래미 어워드는 1958년 제정돼 원래 그래모폰 어워즈라고 불리던 시상식인 그래미 어워드에서 미국 원주민 음악 장르의 질 좋은 앨범에 대한 음반가들에게 수여되는 상이다.[1]미국 국립음반예술과학아카데미는 "음반 판매나 차트 포지션에 관계없이, 예술적 성취, 기술력, 음반 산업에서의 전반적인 우수성"을 인정하기 위해 매년 수여하는 시상식에서 여러 부문의 영예를 수여한다.[2]

그래미상은 미국 네이티브 아메리칸 뮤직 어워즈(Native American Music Awards)와 미국 네이티브 아메리칸 뮤직 어워즈(Native American Music Awards)의 창립자인 엘렌 벨로(Ellen Bello)가 3년간 로비 활동을 한 데 이어 2001년 컴파일 앨범모어링 오브 네이션 포와우(Collecting of Nation of Nation Pow)》의 프로듀서)로 톰 비와 더글러스 스팟 이글(Douglands)에게 처음 수여됐다.[3]이전에는 미국 원주민의 음반이 민속 음악, 세계 음악 또는 뉴에이지 음악 범주에 포함되었다.[4]일부 북미 원주민 예술가들은 이 상이 "오늘날의 인도 음악의 폭을 수용하기에는 너무 좁게 정의되어 있다"고 비판했지만, 다른 이들은 이 상이 포함되었다고 자부했다.[5][6]이 상의 명칭은 2001년과 2011년 사이에 변함이 없었다.제52회 그래미 어워드의 부문별 설명 가이드에 따르면, 이 상은 좀 더 '전통적인 자연'의 음반을 기리기 위한 목적으로 "새로 녹음된 음악의 51% 이상의 재생 시간을 담은 보컬 또는 기악 네이티브 아메리칸 음악 앨범"에 수여되었다.[7]
