그래미상은 1958년 제정돼 원래 그라모폰 어워즈라고 불리던 시상식인 그래미 어워드에서 록 음악 장르에서 수준 높은 보컬 퍼포먼스를 담은 작품(노래 또는 앨범)으로 남성 레코딩 아티스트에게 수여하는 상이다.[1]미국 국립음반예술과학아카데미는 "음반 판매나 차트 포지션에 관계없이, 예술적 성취, 기술력, 음반 산업에서의 전반적인 우수성"을 인정하기 위해 매년 수여하는 시상식에서 여러 부문의 영예를 수여한다.[2]
원래 그래미상 최우수 록 보컬상, Male으로 불리던 이 상은 1980년 밥 딜런에게 처음 수여되었다.1995년 시상식을 시작으로 최우수 남성 록 보컬 퍼포먼스로 명칭이 바뀌었다.그러나 1988년, 1992년, 1994년, 2005년 이후 이 부문은 그래미상 최우수 여성 록 보컬 퍼포먼스 부문과 결합되어 베스트 록 보컬 퍼포먼스, 솔로라는 성별이 없는 부문으로 발표되었다.솔로 부문은 이후 2005년부터 Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance로 명칭이 변경되었다.이 퓨전은 특히 여성이 솔로 부문에 후보로 지명되지 않을 때 비판을 받아왔다.[3]아카데미는 여성 록 부문에서 자격이 있는 음반들의 부족을 합병의 이유로 들었다.[4]2005년 이 부문 합병 이후 이 상은 수여되지 않았지만, 공식적으로 은퇴를 확정하는 것은 발표되지 않았다.
레니 크라비츠는 1999년부터 2002년까지 총 4연승으로 이 부문 최다승 기록을 보유하고 있다.브루스 스프링스틴은 이 상을 세 차례 수상했으며, 에릭 클랩튼, 밥 딜런, 돈 헨리, 로버트 팔머가 두 차례 수상하였다.창간 이래 영국 출신 음악가, 호주 출신 음악가, 남아공 출신 음악가들에게 네 차례나 수여됐지만 미국 아티스트들은 그 어떤 국적보다도 많은 상을 받았다.
