그래미 어워드 최우수 얼터너티브 뮤직 앨범상은 1958년 제정돼 원래 그라모폰 어워드라고 불리던 시상식인 그래미 어워드에서 대안 장르의 질 좋은 앨범에 대한 음반가들에게 수여하는 상이다.[1]미국 국립음반예술과학아카데미는 "음반 판매나 차트 포지션에 관계없이, 예술적 성취, 기술력, 음반 산업에서의 전반적인 우수성"을 인정하기 위해 매년 수여하는 시상식에서 여러 부문의 영예를 수여한다.[2]
'대안'의 정의가 논란이 된 가운데 이 상은 1991년 비주류 록 앨범을 '대학 라디오 방송국에서 힘차게 연주했다'[4][5]고 인정하기 위해 처음 수여됐다.[3]카테고리 설명을 여러 번 업데이트한 후, 그래미 조직은 2019 그래미 시즌에 대해 다음과 같은 성명을 발표했다.
대안이란 그것과 관련된 음악과 태도 모두에서 진보와 혁신의 속성을 수용하는 음악의 한 장르로 정의된다.그것은 종종 덜 강렬한 록의 버전이나 더 강렬한 팝의 버전이며, 전형적으로 더 독창적이고, 다양하며, 음악적으로 도전적인 것으로 간주된다.다양한 하위 장르 또는 그 하이브리드 장르를 포함할 수 있으며 다른 장르 범주에 맞지 않는 녹음을 포함할 수 있다.
1991년, 그리고 1994년부터 1999년까지 이 상은 최고의 대체 음악 공연으로 알려져 있다.[3]이 상은 아티스트, 프로듀서, 엔지니어/믹서에게 주어진다. 단, 앨범 재생 시간의 50% 이상이 주어진다.마스터링 엔지니어는 물론 재생시간이 50% 미만인 프로듀서나 엔지니어는 위너스 자격증을 신청할 수 있다.[6]
2019년 현재, 라디오헤드, 더 화이트 스트라이프, 벡은 각각 3번씩 우승하며 이 부문에서 최다 우승 기록을 공유하고 있다.시네아드 오코너, 세인트빈센트, 피오나 애플 등 3명의 여성 솔로 아티스트가 수상했으며, 여성 멤버가 소속된 밴드 더 화이트 스트라이프와 앨라배마 쉐이크도 수상했다.현재까지 8개 부문에 후보로 오른 비외르크, 라디오헤드, 벡은 이 부문에서 최다 후보 기록을 보유하고 있으며, 라디오헤드 가수 톰 요크는 솔로 앨범으로 2007년과 2020년 수상 후보에 올라 총 10개 부문에 후보로 올랐다.비예르크는 솔로 가수 최다 후보 기록뿐 아니라 무승부 최다 후보 기록도 보유하고 있다.뱀파이어 위켄드와 콜드플레이는 각각 두 차례 수상했으며, 2년 연속 수상하는 그룹은 콜드플레이가 유일하다.영국 출신 음악가나 그룹에게 5회, 아일랜드 출신 2회, 프랑스와 호주 출신 1회씩 시상했지만 미국 아티스트에게는 그 어떤 국적보다도 많은 상이 수여됐다.
