2017년 4월 18일 조지아 제6의회 선거구를 위한 미국 하원의원 선거 특별 선거가 실시되었고, 두 달 후인 6월 20일에 결선 투표가 실시되었다. 공화당의 카렌 헨델은 결선 투표에서 51.8% 대 48.2%로 민주당 존 오스소프를 이겼다. 헨델은 톰 프라이스의 뒤를 이어 톰 프라이스의 후임으로, 트럼프 행정부에서 미국 보건복지부 장관으로 인준을 받고 자리에서 물러났다. 결선투표는 4월 18일 선거에서 개인 후보가 과반수 득표자가 없을 때 필요했다. 오스소프는 1차 투표에서 48.1%의 지지를 받았고, 헨델이 19.8%로 뒤를 이었다.
그루지야 주법은 그루지야 주지사가 공석 최소 30일 후에 특별 선거를 실시하도록 요구하고 있다. 네이단 딜 주지사는 프라이스의 사퇴에 따라 2017년 2월 13일부터 15일까지 예비후보들을 위한 접수창구를 갖추면서 [1]4월 18일 특별선거를 실시해야 한다고 요구했다.[2] 모든 후보가 한 표로 출마했고, 결선투표는 50%의 득표율을 얻지 못할 경우 1, 2위 결선투표로 치러질 예정이다.[3] 오스소프와 헨델 모두 과반수 의석을 얻지 못했고, 민주당 오스소프가 1차 투표에서 거의 30점을 앞서고 있음에도 불구하고, 공화당의 헨델은 결선 투표에서 우세했지만, 결국 2018년 민주당 루시 매바스 후보에게 재선에 지지는 못할 것이다. 오스소프는 이후 2021년 결선투표에서 현직 데이비드 퍼듀를 누르고 미국 상원의원으로 선출되어 조지아 출신의 첫 유대인 상원의원이 되었고, 1972년 조 바이든 이후 처음으로 선출된 최연소 민주당 상원의원이 되었다.
이번 선거는 양대 정당이 2018년 중간선거에 앞서 정치적 이야기를 구체화할 수 있는 기회로 인식하는 등 비상한 국익을 끌어냈다.[4][5] 이 지역은 공화당 후보를 큰 표차로 선호한 전력이 있지만, 2016년 트럼프가 1% 차이로 승리해 민주당이 평소 강세였던 공화당을 이길 수 있다는 희망을 갖게 했다. 지난 6월 17일 조기투표 기간이 마감된 현재 총 5000만 달러가 지출돼 역대 하원의원 선거 중 가장 비용이 많이 든 선거다.[6] 그 중 4천만 달러 이상이 텔레비전과 라디오 광고에만 사용되어 하원 선거 기록을 강타했다.[7] 14만 명의 매우 많은 수의 유권자들이 결선 투표 기간 동안 투표를 했다.[6]
2021년 현재 공화당이 그루지야 제6의회 선거구에서 승리한 것은 이번이 마지막이다.

결선
2017년 4월 18일 종합경선("정글 경선")[55]에서 50%의 득표율을 얻은 후보는 없었다. 오스소프가 약 48.1%의 득표율로 선두를 달렸고, 공화당의 카렌 헨델 후보가 19.8%를 얻었으며, 나머지 표는 16명의 다른 후보들에게 분산되었다.[56][57] 절대다수를 확보한 후보가 없어 상위 2표수인 오스소프와 헨델은 2017년 6월 20일 결선투표에 출전했다.[58][57] 오스소프는 민주당 득표율 1%를 제외하고 모두 승리했고 공화당 득표율은 더 심하게 분열됐다. 공화당은 전체 투표에서 51.2%를 득표했다.[59]
오스소프는 미국 하원의 한 후보를 위한 전국적인 모금 기록을 깼다.[60] 오스소프의 캠페인은 모두 2,300만 달러 이상을 모금했으며, 이 중 3분의 2는 전국의 소액 기부자들이 기부했다.[61] 비록 헨델의 캠페인이 슈퍼 PAC와 소위 "다크 머니"로 익명으로 자금을 지원한 사람들을 포함한 다른 외부 단체들로부터 많은 지지를 받았지만, 오스소프의 상대인 카렌 헨델과 전국 공화당 단체들은 조지아 외곽에서 상당한 소액 기부금을 모금했다고 공격했다.[62][63] 선거운동원들과 외부 단체들이 그들을 대신해서 지출한 금액을 합치면 5천 5백만 달러가 넘는 것으로 미국 역사상 가장 비싼 하원의원 선거였다.[64] 선거 운동 기간 동안 공화당 전략은 양극화되고 인기 없는 인물인 낸시 펠로시 하원의장과 오소프를 연결하는 데 초점을 맞췄고, 오소프는 당선될 경우 펠로시 의장을 지지할 것인지에 대해서는 말을 아꼈다.[65]

2017년 6월 20일 오스프는 51.87% 대 48.13%로 헨델에 패했다. 선거 결과에 대한 보도에 이어 뉴욕타임스는 이번 경선이 "민주당을 위한 사기를 떨어뜨리는 것"[116]이라고 평가했다. 이것은 1992년 북부 교외 지역으로서의 현재의 구성을 가정했을 때 민주당 후보가 이 지역구에서 승리할 뻔 했던 것과 다름없었다; 이전에는 민주당 도전자들이 단지 두 번 40% 이상의 득표율을 얻었을 뿐이었다.[117] 헨델은 이후 2018년 11월 6일 민주당 도전자 루시 맥바스에게 재선에 패배하여 현재 형태의 지역구를 대표하는 최초의 민주당원이 되었다.
