시리아와 터키 하타이 지방(이전 북부 시리아의 일부)의 이러한 공동체 구성원들은 여전히 아랍어로 "동방 로마인" 또는 "아시아 그리스인"을 의미하는 Rm이라고 부르는데, 이 두 지역 모두 이를 가리킨다. 비잔틴의 유산, 그리고 실제로 그들은 그 중심 그리스어 버전의 콘스탄틴어 또는 비잔틴어 굿을 따른다.
그런 특수한 맥락에서 성서 히브리어와 고전 아랍어로 "유럽-그리스어" 또는 이오니아어를 뜻하는 "야와니" 또는 "이오나니"를 우선하여 "Rûm"이라는 용어를 사용한다.
이들 공동체의 구성원들은 스스로를 '멜크족'이라고 부르기도 하는데, 이는 말 그대로 셈어(마케도니아어와 로마 제국 통치에 대한 고대 충성을 일컫는 말)로 '황제를 받드는 사람들'이라는 뜻이지만, 근대에 이르러서는 그리스 가톨릭 안티오키아 교회의 추종자들이 이 용어를 더 흔하게 사용하는 경향이 있다.
