Cyril Falls

시릴 벤담 폭포 CBE[1](Cyril Bentham Falls CBE, 1888년 3월 2일 ~ 1971년 4월 23일)는 제1차 세계대전에 관한 연구로 유명한 20세기 영국의 군사사학자, 언론인, 학술인이었다.

초년기

폴스는 1888년 3월 2일 아일랜드 더블린에서 타이론 카운티의 얼스터 지주인 찰스 폴스 경의 장남으로 태어났다. 포르토라 로얄 스쿨, 에니스킬렌, 런던 대학교에서 정규 교육을 받았다.[2] 27세의 나이에 그는 첫 번째 책인 '루드야드 키플링: 비판적 연구'(1915년)를 출판했다.

제1차 세계 대전

제1차 세계 대전 동안 그는 영국 육군에 파견되어 왕실 이니스킬링후실리어스의 하위대원으로 임명되었다.[3] 분쟁 당시 36사단(Ulster) 본부와 62사단(2 West Rideing) 본부에서 참모장을 지냈다. 프랑스 크로익스 드 게레(Croix de Guerre)를 받았으며, 대위 계급으로 영국군에서 제대하였다.

병영사경력

영국 육군 폭포를 떠난 직후, 전쟁 중에 함께 복무했던 한 사단의 역사를 '36사단의 역사'라는 제목으로 썼는데, 이 사단은 1922년에 출간되었다.

1923년부터 1939년까지 영국 정부 제국 방위 위원회의 역사 부문에 고용되어 영국 정부의 '전쟁의 공식 역사'[4] 몇 권의 본문을 연구하고 집필하였다.

1939년부터 1945년까지 그는 제2차 세계 대전 동안 타임즈의 군사 특파원이었습니다.[5]

1946년부터 1953년까지 그는 옥스퍼드 올 소울 칼리지의 군사 역사학 교수직을 맡았다.[6] 1940년대 후반부터 1970년대 초까지 그는 군사의 생산적인 작가로서 상업 시장을 위한 일반 작품뿐만 아니라 상세한 연구들을 심층적으로 출판했으며, 그의 마지막 두 개의 타이틀이 사후에 출판되었다.

역사학자 마이클 하워드 경은 나중에 폴스의 저서 '제36부(Ulster) 사단의 역사'(1922년)를 다음과 같이 묘사했다. 서부전선의 상황에 대한 가장 훌륭한 묘사는 전쟁 문학의 어느 곳에서도 찾아볼 수 있다.[7]

죽음

폴스는 1971년 4월 23일 서리 주의 월튼온테임스에서 84년 만에 사망했다.
