벵골 저널은 1785년 윌리엄 듀아인과 토마스 존스가 창간한 신문이다.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
벵골 저널은 프랑스 혁명을 지지하는 기사들과 티푸 술탄에 대항하는 캠페인 동안 콘월리스 경의 죽음에 대한 근거 없는 보도를 게재하기 시작했다. 존 쇼어 인도 총독, 제1대 남작 테이그머스(Teignmouth)가 캘커타에서 망명 중인 프랑스 왕실 정부에 대한 명예훼손 혐의로 신문을 중단했다.[7][8]
