화성의 대기화성을 둘러싼 기체 층이다.주로 이산화탄소(95%), 분자질소(2.8%), 아르곤(2%)[3]으로 구성된다.그것은 또한 미량의 수증기, 산소, 일산화탄소, 수소, 그리고 고귀한 가스를 포함하고 있다.[3][5][2]화성의 대기는 지구보다 훨씬 더 얇다.평균 표면 압력은 약 610 파스칼(0.088psi)에 불과해 지구 값의 1%에도 못 미친다.[2]현재 얇은 화성 대기권에서는 화성 표면에 액체 상태의 물이 존재할 수 없도록 금지하고 있지만, 과거 화성 대기가 훨씬 더 두꺼웠다는 연구결과가 많다.[4]봄과 가을 동안 높은 밀도는 이산화탄소가 극캡에서 부분적으로 얼게 되는 겨울 동안 25% 감소한다.[6]화성에서 가장 높은 대기 밀도는 지구 표면에서 35km(22mi) 떨어진 곳에서 발견된 밀도와 같으며, ~0.020kg/m이다3.[7]화성의 대기는 행성이 형성된 이후 우주로 질량이 감소하고 있으며, 가스의 유출은 오늘날에도 계속되고 있다.[4][8][9]

화성의 대기는 지구보다 더 춥다.태양으로부터의 거리가 더 넓기 때문에 화성은 태양 에너지를 덜 받고 유효 온도는 약 210 K(-63 °C; -82 °F)로 낮다.[2]화성의 평균 표면 배출 온도는 215 K(-58 °C; -73 °F)에 불과해 남극 내륙에 버금간다.[2][4]화성 대기 중 온실 효과의 약성은 지구에서 33 °C(59 °F)와 비교하여 설명할 수 있다.[2][4]낮은 대기의 일일 온도 범위는 낮은 열 관성으로 인해 매우 크다. 일부 지역에서는 표면 근처에 -75 °C(-103 °F)에서 0 °C(32 °F)에 가까운 범위를 가질 수 있다.[2][4][10]화성 대기권 상층부의 온도 또한 성층권 오존이 없고 고도에서 이산화탄소의 복사냉각 효과 때문에 지구보다 현저히 낮다.[4]

지구의 망원경으로 관측할 수 있는 화성과 2018년에는 행성의 색과 밝기의 변화로 육안으로도 관측할 수 있는 더스트 데블먼지 폭풍이 화성에 만연하고 있다.[11][12]행성 순환 먼지 폭풍(지구적 먼지 폭풍)은 지구상에서[4][11] 평균 5.5년마다(화성 3년마다) 발생하며 화성 탐사선의 작동을 위협할 수 있다.[13]그러나, 큰 먼지 폭풍의 발전을 책임지는 메커니즘은 여전히 잘 이해되지 않는다.[14][15]그것은 지구의 조수의 생성과 다소 비슷한 양 달의 중력 영향과 느슨하게 관련되어 있다고 제안되어 왔다.

화성 대기권은 산화 대기권이다.대기 중의 광화학 반응은 유기종을 산화시켜 이산화탄소나 일산화탄소로 변하게 하는 경향이 있다.[4]최근 발사된 엑소마르스 추적 가스 궤도 탐사선 중 가장 민감한 메탄 탐사선은 화성 전역의 대기에서 메탄을 발견하는 데 실패했지만,[16][17][18] 이전의 몇몇 임무와 지상 망원경은 화성 대기에서 예상치 못한 수준의 메탄을 발견했는데, 이것은 화성 생명체생물학적 변광체일 수도 있다.[19][20][21]그러나 이번 측정에 대한 해석은 여전히 논란이 많고 과학적 공감대가 부족하다.[21][22]

대기 관측의 역사

1784년 독일 태생의 영국 천문학자 윌리엄 허셜이 <철학적 거래>에서 화성 대기권의 관측에 관한 기사를 발표하면서 화성의 밝은 지역이 가끔 움직이는 것에 주목했는데, 화성은 구름과 증기에 기인한다고 한다.[23][24]1809년 프랑스의 천문학자 호르네 플로거게스는 화성의 황운 관측에 대해 썼는데, 이는 먼지 폭풍 사건일 가능성이 높다.[23]1864년, 윌리엄 러터 도스는 "행성의 루디한 색조는 대기의 어떤 특이성으로부터 생기는 것이 아니라, 대기가 가장 얇은 중심부 근처에 항상 붉은빛이 가장 깊다는 사실에 의해 충분히 증명되는 것 같다"[25]고 관찰했다.1860년대와 1870년대의[26] 분광학적 관측은 많은 사람들로 하여금 화성의 대기가 지구와 비슷하다고 생각하게 만들었다.그러나 1894년 윌리엄 월러스 캠벨의한 스펙트럼 분석과 다른 질적 관찰은 화성이 많은 면에서 눈에 띄는 대기가 없는 을 닮았다는 것을 시사했다.[26]1926년 릭 천문대에서 윌리엄 해먼드 라이트의 사진 관측으로 도날드 하워드 멘젤이 화성 대기의 양적 증거를 발견할 수 있었다.[27][28]

대기 가스의 광학적 성질에 대한 이해와 분광계 기술의 발전으로 과학자들은 20세기 중반 화성 대기의 구성을 측정하기 시작했다.루이스 데이비드 카플란과 그의 팀은 1964년 화성의 분광기에서 수증기와 이산화탄소의 신호를 탐지했고 1969년에는 일산화탄소도 탐지했다.[29][30]1965년 마리너 4호의 플라이비에서 측정한 결과 화성 대기는 대부분 이산화탄소로 구성되며, 표면 압력은 약 400~700Pa이다.[31]화성 대기권의 구성이 알려진 후 화성에서 생명체의 생존 가능성을 결정하기 위한 우주생물학적 연구가 지구에서 시작되었다."마스 항아리"라고 불리는 화성의 환경 조건을 모의 실험한 컨테이너는 이러한 목적을 위해 개발되었다.[32]

1976년 바이킹 프로그램의 착륙선 두 명이 화성 대기 구성의 사상 최초의 현장 측정을 제공했다.이번 임무의 또 다른 목표는 화성의 과거 또는 현재 생물의 증거에 대한 조사를 포함했다(바이킹 착륙선 생물학적 실험 참조.[33]이후 많은 궤도선과 착륙선이 화성에 보내져 미량가스 농도, 동위원소 비율 등 화성 대기의 서로 다른 성질을 측정했다.또한 화성 운석의 망원경 관측과 분석을 통해 독립적인 정보 출처를 제공하여 발견 사실을 검증한다.이 우주선에 의해 만들어진 상상력과 측정은 지구 밖의 대기 과정에 대한 우리의 이해를 크게 향상시킨다.탐사선 큐리오시티와 착륙선 InSight는 여전히 화성 표면에서 실험을 진행하고 있으며 현지 일상을 보고하고 있다.[34][35]화성 2020 프로그램을 구성한 탐사선 페르세우스와 헬기 인제너티호가 2021년 2월 착륙했다.탐사선 로잘린드 프랭클린은 2022년에 발사될 예정이다.

현재화학구성

이산화탄소

CO는2 화성 대기의 주요 성분이다.평균 부피비율은 94.9%[3]이다.겨울 극지방에서는 대기 중 CO2.2 가스의 서리점보다 표면 온도가 낮아지면 1~2m 두께의 고체 드라이아이스가 형성될 수 있다.[4]여름에 극지방 드라이아이스 캡은 승화를 거쳐 이산화탄소를2 대기 중으로 방출할 수 있다.그 결과 화성에서 연간 대기압의 유의미한 변동성(2525%)과 대기조성을 관측할 수 있다.[36]응축 과정은 CO에2 대한 Closius-Clapeyron 관계에 의해 대략적으로 추정될 수 있다.[37][4]

지구, 금성, 화성 대기 중 이산화탄소, 질소, 아르곤의 풍부성 비교

화성 대기 중 CO2 농도가 높음에도 불구하고 수증기 농도가 낮고 대기압도 낮아 화성(약 5℃)에서는 온실효과가 상대적으로 약하다.지구 대기의 수증기가 현대 지구에 미치는 온실 효과에 가장 큰 기여를 하는 반면, 화성 대기에서는 매우 낮은 농도로만 존재한다.더구나 저기압에서는 온실가스가 압력확대 효과가 약하기 때문에 적외선 방사선을 효과적으로 흡수할 수 없다.[38][39]

태양 자외선이 존재하는 경우(, 225nm 미만의 파장을 가진 광자) 화성 대기 중 CO는2 다음과 같은 반응을 통해 광학화 할 수 있다.

CO2 + (λ < 225 nm) ⟶ CO + O.

만약2 CO의 화학적 생산이 없다면, 현재의 화성 대기 중 모든 CO는2 약 3,500년 후에 광분해로 제거될 것이다.[4]수증기의 광분해로부터 생성되는 히드록실산소(OH)와 다른 홀수 수소종(예: H, HO2)은 일산화탄소(CO)를 다시2 CO로 변환할 수 있다.반응 주기는 다음과 같이 설명할 수 있다.[40][41]

혼합은 O, CO, O를2 상층 대기권 아래쪽으로 불러들여 CO를2 재생시키는 역할도 한다.[4]광분해와 리독스 생산 사이의 균형은 현대 화성 대기에서 평균 CO2 농도를 안정적으로 유지한다.

CO2 얼음 구름은 겨울2 극지방에서 형성될 수 있으며, 대기 온도가 CO 서리점보다 낮은 열대지방에서는 매우 높은 고도(>50km)에서 형성될 수 있다.[2][42][43]

질소

N은2 화성 대기에서 두 번째로 풍부한 가스다.평균 부피비율은 [3]2.6%이다.다양한 측정 결과 화성 대기는 N으로 농축되어 있는 것으로 나타났다.[44][45]질소의 무거운 동위원소 농축은 대량 선택적 탈출 과정에 의해 야기될 수 있다.[46]

아르곤

아르곤은 화성 대기 중 세 번째로 풍부한 가스다.평균 부피비율은 [3]1.9%이다.안정적인 동위원소 기준으로 볼 때, 화성은 아르에 비해 아르에 농축되어 있어 유체역학 탈출에 기인할 수 있다.

아르곤의 동위 원소 중 하나인 아르(Ar)는 K의 방사성 붕괴로부터 생성된다.이와는 대조적으로, Ar는 원시적이다.그것은 화성이 형성된 후 대기 중에 존재했다.관측 결과 화성은 아르에 비해 아르에 농축되어 있으며, 이는 대량 선택적 손실 과정 때문이라고 볼 수 없다.[49]화성의 초기 역사에서 충격 침식으로 아를 포함한 원시 대기의 상당량이 소실된 반면, 아르는 충격 후 대기로 방출됐다는 것이 농축에 대한 가능한 설명이다.[49][4]

산소 및 오존

화성 대기 중 분자 산소(O2)의 추정 평균 부피 비율은 0.174%[3]이다.CO2, 수증기, 오존(O3)의 광분해 제품 중 하나이다.원자산소(O)와 반응해 오존(O3)을 다시 형성할 수 있다.2010년 허셜 우주전망대는 화성 대기에서 분자 산소를 검출했다.[50]

원자산소는 상층 대기의 CO를2 광분해하여 생성되며, 분열 재조합이나 이온 픽업을 통해 대기를 탈출할 수 있다.2016년 초 적외선 천문대 성층권 관측소(SOFIA)는 1970년대 바이킹과 마리너 임무 이후 지금까지 발견되지 않았던 화성 대기에서 원자산소를 검출했다.[51]

2019년 가스 측정 작업을 해온 NASA 과학자들은 화성 대기 중 산소량이 봄과 여름에 30% 증가했다는 사실을 발견했다.[52]

지구 대기의 성층권 오존과 유사하게 화성 대기에 존재하는 오존은 이상 수소종을 수반하는 촉매 사이클에 의해 파괴될 수 있다.

물은 이러한 기묘한 수소 종의 중요한 원천이기 때문에 수증기 함량이 낮은 지역에서 오존의 풍부도가 높은 것이 보통 관측된다.[53]측정 결과 공기가 차고 수분 포화율이 낮은 겨울과 봄철 극지방 중심으로 오존의 총 컬럼이 2~30μm에 이를 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.[54]오존과 홀수 수소종 사이의 실제 반응은 물-얼음구름에서 일어나는 이질적인 반응에 의해 더욱 복잡해질 수 있다.[55]

화성 대기에서 오존의 수직 분포와 계절성은 태양빛 위도에서 극지방으로 산소가 풍부한 공기를 운반하는 화학작용과 복잡한 상호작용에 의해 추진된다고 생각된다.[56][57]마스 익스프레스(SPICAM)의 UV/IR 분광계는 중저위도 지역에서 두 개의 뚜렷한 오존층이 존재한다는 것을 보여주었다.이들은 고도 30km 이하의 지속적인 지표면 층, 고도 30~60km의 북방 봄과 여름에만 존재하는 별도 층, 그리고 겨울에 남극 상공 40~60km에 존재하는 또 다른 별도 층으로 구성되며, 화성의 북극 위에 상대 층이 없다.[58]이 세 번째 오존층은 남쪽으로 75도에서 50도 사이의 급격한 상승 감소를 보여준다.SPICAM은 한겨울까지 50km에서 오존 농도가 점진적으로 증가하는 것을 감지했고, 그 후 35km 이상에서 검출할 수 있는 층이 없는 매우 낮은 농도로 서서히 감소하였다.[56]

수증기

수증기는 화성 대기 중의 미량 기체로서 공간적, 주간적, 계절적 변동성이 크다.[59][60]1970년대 후반 바이킹 궤도선에 의한 측정은 수증기의 전 세계 총 질량이 약 1~2km의3 얼음과 같다는 것을 시사했다.[61]마스 익스프레스 궤도선에 의한 보다 최근의 측정은 세계적으로 연간 평균 수증기의 풍부도가 약 10-20 미크론(pr. μm)이라는 것을 보여주었다.[62][63]수증기 최대 풍부(50-70 pr)μm)는 극지캡에 있는 수빙의 승화로 인해 초여름에 북극지방에서 발견된다.[62]

지구의 대기에서와 달리, 화성 대기에서는 액체 상태의 물 구름은 존재할 수 없다; 이것은 낮은 대기압 때문이다.오퍼튜니티 로버피닉스 착륙선에는 서러스 같은 수빙 구름이 카메라에 포착됐다.[64][65]피닉스호 착륙선에 의한 측정은 밤에 행성 경계층 꼭대기에서 수빙 구름이 형성되어 북극 지역의 얼음 결정체로서 표면으로 다시 침전될 수 있다는 것을 보여주었다.[60][66]

먼지

충분히 강한 바람(> 30 ms−1) 아래에서는 먼지 입자를 동원하여 표면에서 대기 중으로 끌어올릴 수 있다.[2][4]먼지 입자의 일부는 대기 중에 매달려 순환을 통해 이동하다가 다시 땅으로 떨어질 수 있다.[14]먼지 입자는 태양 방사선을 감쇠시키고 적외선과 상호작용을 할 수 있어 화성에 상당한 복사 효과를 가져올 수 있다.궤도선 측정에 따르면 전 세계적으로 평균적인 먼지 광학 깊이는 0.15의 배경 수준을 가지고 있으며, 주변 계절(남쪽 봄과 여름)에 최고점을 기록하고 있다.[67]먼지의 풍부함은 계절과 연도에 따라 크게 다르다.[67][68]지구 먼지 이벤트 동안 화성 표면 자산은 4가 넘는 광학 깊이를 관측할 수 있다.[69][70]지표면 측정 결과 먼지 입자의 유효 반지름도 0.6μm에서 2μm로 나타났으며 계절성이 상당하다.[70][71][72]

화성의 먼지는 수직 분포가 고르지 않다.행성 경계층과는 별도로 음향 데이터는 높은 고도(예: 표면 위 15~30km)에서 먼지 혼합비의 다른 피크가 있다는 것을 보여주었다.[73][74][14]

메탄

화산 및 생물 발생 종으로서 메탄은 지질학자와 우주생물학자들이 관심을 갖고 있다.[21]그러나, 메탄은 UV 방사선과 함께 산화 대기에서 화학적으로 불안정하다.화성 대기에서 메탄의 수명은 약 400년이다.[75]행성 대기에서 메탄의 검출은 최근의 지질 활동이나 생물체의 존재를 나타낼 수 있다.[21][76][77][75]2004년 이후 다양한 임무와 관찰 연구에서 미량의 메탄(60ppb에서 검출 한계 미만(<0.05ppb))이 보고되었다.[78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][16]화성의 메탄의 근원과 관측된 메탄 농도의 엄청난 불일치에 대한 설명은 여전히 활발하게 논의되고 있다.[22][21][75]

이산화황

대기 중의 아황산가스(SO2)는 현재의 화산 활동을 나타내는 지표일 것이다.화성의 오랜 메탄 논란으로 특히 흥미로워졌다.화산이 최근 화성 역사에서 활발했다면 현재의 화성 대기에서 메탄과 함께 SO를 발견할2 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.[87][88]감도 상한이 0.2ppb로 설정된 대기 중 SO는2 검출되지 않았다.[89][90]그러나 NASA 고다드 우주비행센터 과학자들이 이끄는 연구팀은 2013년 3월 큐리오시티 탐사선이 분석한 록네스트 토양 샘플에서 SO가2 검출됐다고 보고했다.[91]

기타 미량 가스

일산화탄소(CO)는 CO의2 광분해에 의해 생성되며 화성 대기 중 산화물과 빠르게 반응하여 CO를2 다시 형성한다.화성 대기 중 CO의 추정 평균 부피 비율은 0.0747%[3]이다.

헬륨과 아르곤 이외의 고귀한 가스는 화성 대기 중 미량 수준( (10~0.01ppmv)[clarification needed]에 존재한다.화성 대기 중 헬륨, 네온, 크립톤, 크립톤, 제논의 농도는 각기 다른 임무에 의해 측정되었다.[92][93][94][95]고귀한 가스의 동위원소 비율은 화성의 초기 지질 활동과 화성의 대기의 진화에 대한 정보를 보여준다.[92][95][96]

분자 수소(H2)는 중간 대기에서 이상한 수소종 사이의 반응에 의해 생성된다.혼합 또는 확산으로 상층 대기로 전달될 수 있고, 태양 방사선에 의해 원자 수소(H)로 분해되어 화성 대기에서 탈출할 수 있다.[97]광화학 모델링에서는 낮은 대기에서 H의2 혼합비가 약 15 ±5ppmv라고 추정했다.[97]

수직구조

화성 대기의 수직 온도 구조는 많은 면에서 지구의 대기와는 다르다.수직 구조에 대한 정보는 일반적으로 열적외선 소리, 무선 통신, 에어로브레이킹, 착륙선 진입 프로필의 관측을 사용하여 추정한다.[98][99]화성의 대기는 평균 온도 프로파일에 따라 세 층으로 분류할 수 있다.

  • 대류권(180–40km):대부분의 기상 현상(대류 및 먼지 폭풍 등)이 발생하는 층.그것의 역학은 주간 표면 가열과 부유 분진의 양에 의해 크게 추진된다.화성은 중력이 약하기 때문에 지구(8.5km)보다 11.1km의 높은 스케일을 가지고 있다.[5]화성의 이론적 건식 소멸률은 4.3℃ km이지만−1 부유 먼지 입자가 태양 복사를 흡수해 공기를 가열하기 때문에 측정된 평균 소멸률은 약 2.5℃ km이다−1.[100][2]행성 경계층은 낮 동안 10km 이상의 두께로 확장될 수 있다.[2][101]낮은 열 관성으로 인해 지표면 근일 온도 범위(60°C[100])가 크다.먼지 조건에서 부유 먼지 입자는 야간 표면 온도 범위를 5°C로 줄일 수 있다.[102]15km 이상의 온도는 대류 대신 복사 과정에 의해 제어된다.[2]화성은 또한 태양계의 다른 대기에서 발견되는 "0.1-bar 대류권" 규칙에서 드문 예외다.[103]
  • 메스피어(40–100km):온도가 가장 낮은 층.중층권의 CO는2 열을 우주로 효율적으로 방출함으로써 냉각제 역할을 한다.별의 신비 관측에 따르면 화성의 중간 절연은 약 100km(약 0.01~0.001Pa 수준)에 위치하며, 온도는 100~120K이다.[104]기온은 때때로2 CO의 서리점보다 낮을 수 있으며, 화성 중층권의 CO2 얼음 구름에 대한 탐지가 보고되었다.[42][43]
  • 열권(≈100–230km):이 층은 주로 극한의 자외선 난방에 의해 제어된다.화성 열권의 온도는 고도에 따라 증가하며 계절에 따라 변한다.상층 열권의 낮 온도는 175K(어피니언)에서 240K(피리온)까지 분포하며 최대 390K까지 도달할 수 있지만 여전히 지구 열권의 온도에 비해 현저히 낮다.[105][106]화성 열권의 높은 CO2 농도는 높은 고도에서 CO의2 냉각 효과 때문에 불일치의 일부를 설명할 수 있다.화성에 강한 자기장이 없기 때문에 화성 열권에서는 오로라 가열 과정이 중요하지 않다고 생각되지만, MAVEN 궤도 탐사선은 여러 오로라 사건을 감지했다.[107][108]

화성의 중간 대기권(지구 대기의 성층권 오존, 목성의 대기권의 유기적 연무 등)에서 단파를 흡수하는 종들이 부족하여 화성의 성층권이 지속되지 않아 온도 역전을 일으키지 못하고 있다.[109]그러나 화성 남극 상공에서는 계절 오존층과 중층 대기의 강한 기온 역전 현상이 관측되었다.[57][110]화성의 터보파지 고도는 60에서 140 km까지 크게 변화하며, 그 변동성은 하부 열권의2 CO 밀도에 의해 구동된다.[111]또한 화성은 태양풍 입자, 태양의 극한 자외선과 X선, 그리고 지각의 자기장과 상호작용하는 복잡한 전리층을 가지고 있다.[112][113]화성의 외부권은 약 230 km에서 시작하여 점차 행성간 공간과 합쳐진다.[2]

먼지 및 기타 동적 특성

더스트 데블

더스트 데블은 화성에서 흔하다.[114][14]지구상의 그것들과 마찬가지로, 강한 표면 난방에 의해 움직이는 대류 항구에 먼지 입자가 실릴 때 더스트 데블이 형성된다.[115][116]화성의 더스트 데블은 보통 지름이 수십 미터, 높이가 수 킬로미터로 지구에서 관측된 것보다 훨씬 높다.[2][116]더스트 데블의 흔적을 조사한 결과 화성 더스트 데블의 대부분은 봄과 여름에 섭씨 60°N에서 60°S 정도로 나타난다.[114]그들은 매년 약 2.3 × 1011 kg의 먼지를 육지 표면에서 대기 중으로 들어 올린다. 이는 지역 및 지역 먼지 폭풍의 기여에 필적한다.[114]

먼지폭풍

지역 및 지역 먼지 폭풍은 화성에서 드물지 않다.[14][2]지역 폭풍은 화성의 해마다 약 10km의32 크기와 약 2000개의 사건이 발생하는 반면, 남부 봄과 여름에 10km의62 지역 폭풍이 자주 관측된다.[2]극지방 캡 근처에, 먼지 폭풍은 때때로 정면 활동과 열대외 사이클론들에 의해 발생할 수 있다.[117][14]

지구 먼지 폭풍(면적 > 10km62)은 화성 3년에 한 번 평균적으로 발생한다.[4]관측 결과 더 큰 먼지 폭풍이 보통 작은 먼지 폭풍을 병합한 결과라는 것이 밝혀졌지만,[11][15] 폭풍의 성장 메커니즘과 대기 피드백의 역할은 여전히 잘 파악되지 않고 있다.[15][14]화성 먼지는 지구와 유사한 과정(예: 염분화)에 의해 대기 중으로 유입될 수 있다고 생각되지만, 실제 메커니즘은 아직 검증되지 않았으며, 정전기 또는 자력 또한 먼지 배출량을 조절하는 데 작용할 수 있다.[14]연구원들은 화성에서 가장 큰 먼지 발생원은 메두새 포새 형성으로부터 온다고 보고했다.[118]

열 조수

낮의 태양열 난방과 행성의 밤면의 복사냉각은 압력 차이를 유발할 수 있다.[124]그러한 일별 압력장에 의해 움직이는 바람 순환과 파동인 열조는 화성 대기의 많은 가변성을 설명할 수 있다.[125]지구의 대기와 비교하면, 열 조수가 화성 대기에 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것은 야행성 온도 대조가 더 강하기 때문이다.[23]화성 탐사선이 측정한 표면압은 열 조수의 명확한 신호를 보였지만, 그 변화는 또한 행성의 표면의 모양과 대기 중에 떠 있는 먼지 양에 따라 달라진다.[126]대기파는 또한 수직으로 이동할 수 있고 화성의 중간 대기의 온도와 얼음 함량에 영향을 줄 수 있다.[125]

지구에서, 산맥은 때때로 공기 덩어리를 상승시키고 식게 만든다.그 결과 수증기가 포화 상태가 되고 리프팅 과정에서 구름이 형성된다.[127]화성에서는 궤도가 20km 높이의 화산 아르시아 몬스(Arsia Mons)의 강풍을 중심으로 계절에 따라 거대한 수빙 구름이 반복되는 것을 관측했는데, 이 구름은 같은 메커니즘에 의해 발생했을 가능성이 높다.[128][129]

표면의 바람개조

화성에서는 지표면에 가까운 바람이 먼지만 내뿜는 것이 아니라 오랜 시간 동안 화성의 지형을 변형시키고 있다.화성의 대기는 모래성을 동원하기에는 너무 얇다고 생각했지만, HiRSE의 관측에 따르면 화성에서는 모래언덕의 이동이 드물지 않다.[130][131][132]세계 평균 모래언덕 이주율(2~120m 높이)은 연간 약 0.5m이다.[132]대기 순환 모델은 반복적인 바람 침식과 먼지 침적이 저지대에서 지질학적 시간대의 고지대로 토양 물질의 순 수송으로 이어질 수 있다고 제안했다.[4]

화성과 지구의 C/C와 O/O 비율이 비슷한 반면, N은 화성 대기에서 훨씬 더 고갈된다.광화학탈출과정이 동위원소 분율화의 원인이 되어 지질 시간대에 상당한 질소 손실을 초래한 것으로 생각된다.[4]추정치는 N의2 초기 부분 압력이 최대 30 hPa일 수 있음을 시사한다.[45][144]

화성의 대기는 특히 화성의 낮은 탈출속도로 인해 침식에 영향을 주기 쉽다.초기 컴퓨터 모델은 달 분화구 밀도로 추정된 가상의 폭격 유량에 근거하여 화성이 늦은 폭격을 하는 기간이 끝날 때까지 초기 대기의 99%를 잃을 수 있다고 제안했다.[150]상대적으로 탄소가 풍부하다는 측면에서 화성의 C/Kr 비율은 지구와 금성의 10%에 불과하다.암석이 많은 세 행성이 동일한 초기 휘발성 재고를 가지고 있다고 가정할 때, 이 낮은 C/Kr 비율은 화성 초기 대기 중 CO2 질량이 현재 값보다 10배 높았어야 함을 의미한다.[151]방사활성 아르가 원시 아보다 크게 농축된 것도 충격 침식 이론과 일치한다.[4]

상층 대기 중 수소 유출로 손실된 물의 양을 추정하는 방법 중 하나는 수소보다 중수소가 농축된 것을 조사하는 것이다.동위원소를 기반으로 한 연구는 화성 역사에서 수소 탈출로 지구상에서 12m에서 30m 이상의 동등한 물 이 우주로 유실된 것으로 추정하고 있다.[152]대기 탈출 기반 접근방식은 추정 초기 물 재고에 대한 하한만 제공한다는 점에 유의한다.[4]

화성의 초기 역사 동안 액체 물과 희미한 젊은 태양의 공존을 설명하기 위해서는 화성의 대기에 훨씬 더 강한 온실 효과가 발생하여 표면이 물의 빙점 위로 따뜻해졌을 것이다.Carl Sagan은 처음에 1 bar H의2 대기가 화성에 충분한 온난화를 만들 수 있다고 제안했다.[153]수소는 매우 감소된 초기 화성 맨틀에서 활발한 과소비로 생산될 수 있으며, 이산화탄소와2 수증기가 존재하면 그러한 온실효과를 발생시키기 위해 필요한2 H의 풍부함을 낮출 수 있다.[154]그럼에도 불구하고 광화학 모델링은 H의2 이 높은 수준으로 대기를 유지하는 것이 어렵다는 것을 보여주었다.[155]SO는2 또한 화성의 초기 역사에서 제안된 효과적인 온실 가스들 중 하나이다.[156][157][158]그러나 다른 연구에서는 SO의2 높은 용해성, HSO24 에어로졸의 효율적인 형성, 표면 침적 등이 화성 대기에서 SO의2 장기적 축적을 금지하고, 따라서 SO의2 잠재적 온난화 효과를 감소시킨다는 것을 제시했다.[4]

현대 화성의 대기 탈출

중력이 낮음에도 불구하고 청바지 탈출은 엑소바제(고도 200km의 200K)에서 상대적으로 낮은 온도 때문에 현대 화성 대기에서 효율적이지 못하다.그것은 화성에서 수소가 빠져나가는 것을 설명할 수 있을 뿐이다.산소, 탄소, 질소의 관찰된 탈출을 설명하기 위해 다른 비열 과정이 필요하다.

수소탈출

탄소탈출

일산화탄소의 자외선 광분해는 화성의 탄소 배출에 있어 또 다른 중요한 메커니즘이다.[166]

다른 잠재적으로 중요한 메커니즘으로는 CO의2 스퍼터링 탈출과 탄소와 빠른 산소 원자의 충돌 등이 있다.[4]추정된 전체 탈출 유량은 약 0.6 × 107 cm−2 s−1 ~ 2.2 × 107 cm−2 s이며−1 태양 활동에 크게 의존한다.[167][4]

질소탈출

탄소처럼, N의2+ 분열적 재조합은 화성의 질소 탈출에 중요하다.[168][169]또한 다른 광화학 탈출 메커니즘도 중요한 역할을 한다.[168][170]

질소 배출 속도는 원자 질량과 태양 활동에 매우 민감하다.N의 전체 추정 탈출률은 4.8 × 105 cm−2 s이다−1.[168]

산소탈출

CO와2+ O의2+ 분산 재조합(CO2+ 반응에서도 생성됨)은 다음과 같이 탈출할 수 있을 만큼 충분히 빠르게 이동하는 산소 원자를 생성할 수 있다.

그러나 관측 결과 화성 외부권에는 분화재조합 메커니즘에 의해 예측된 빠른 산소원자가 충분하지 않다는 것을 알 수 있었다.[171][149]모델 추정 산소가탈률은 수소탈출률보다 10배 이상 낮을 수 있음을 시사했다.[167][172]이온 픽과 스퍼팅은 산소 탈출의 대체 메커니즘으로 제시되어 왔지만, 이 모델은 그것들이 현재 분화 재조합보다 덜 중요하다는 것을 암시한다.[173]

설명할 수 없는 현상

메탄 검출

메탄(CH4)은 현재 화성의 산화 대기에서 화학적으로 불안정하다.그것은 태양의 자외선과 다른 기체와의 화학적 반응으로 인해 빠르게 분해될 것이다.따라서 대기 중에 메탄의 지속적인 존재는 가스를 지속적으로 보충할 수 있는 공급원의 존재를 의미할 수 있다.

100개가 넘는 전지구적 사운드로 화성 대기 중 메탄을 가장 민감하게 측정해 온 ESA-로스코모스 궤적 가스 궤도선(ESA-Roscomos Trace Gas Obitter)은 검출 한도가 0.05ppb(ppb)인 메탄을 발견하지 못했다.[16][17][18]그러나 지상 망원경과 큐리오시티 탐사선에 의한 메탄 검출에 대한 다른 보고도 있었다.몇 ppb 수준의 미량의 메탄은 2003년 NASA 고다드 우주 비행 센터의 한 팀에 의해 화성 대기에서 처음 보고되었다.[175][176]2003년과 2006년에 취해진 관측치들 사이에 많은 차이가 측정되었는데, 이는 메탄이 국지적으로 농축되어 있고 아마도 계절에 따라 존재할 것이라는 것을 시사했다.[177]

호기심은 대기 메탄의 주기적인 계절적 변화를 감지했다.

화성의 메탄 원산의 주요 후보지는 물암 반응, 물의 방사분해, 피시처-트로프슈2 합성을 통해 메탄과 다른 탄화수소를 발생시킬 수 있는 H2 생성하는 비생물학적 과정이다.[182]화성에 흔히 있는 것으로 알려진 물과 이산화탄소, 미네랄 올리빈 등이 포함된 공정에 의해 메탄이 생성될 수 있다는 사실도 밝혀졌다.[183]메탄오균과 같은 살아있는 미생물은 또 다른 가능한 원천이지만 화성에서 그러한 미생물의 존재에 대한 증거는 발견되지 않았다.[184][185][79]메탄 검출에 대한 의혹이 일부 있는데, 이는 대신 탐사선으로부터 미등록된 지상 오염이나 측정 원시 데이터의 잘못된 해석에 의한 것일 수 있음을 시사한다.[22][186]

번개 이벤트

2009년 지구를 기반으로 한 관찰 연구는 화성에서 대규모의 전기 방전 사건이 발견되었다고 보고했으며, 화성 먼지 폭풍의 낙뢰 방전과 관련이 있다고 제안했다.[187]그러나 이후 관측 연구에서는 화성 익스프레스와 지구 기반 알렌 망원경 어레이의 레이더 수신기를 사용해 그 결과를 재현할 수 없다는 것이 밝혀졌다.[188][189][190]화성의 기압이 먼지 알갱이를 충전하는 데 좋지 않아 화성 대기에서 번개를 일으키기 어렵다는 연구 결과가 나왔다.[191][190]

적도 상공의 초회전 제트

초회전이란 대기 질량이 적도의 행성 표면보다 각속도가 높은 현상을 말하며, 원칙적으로 비대칭 축대칭 순환에 의해 구동될 수 없다.[192][193]동화 데이터와 일반순환모델(GCM) 시뮬레이션은 지구 먼지폭풍 때 화성 대기에서 초회전제트를 발견할 수 있다는 점을 시사하지만 금성이나 타이탄처럼 회전 속도가 느린 행성에서 관측된 것보다 훨씬 약하다.[117]GCM 실험은 열 조수가 초회전제트를 유도하는 역할을 할 수 있다는 것을 보여주었다.[194]그럼에도 불구하고 초회전 모델 제작은 여전히 행성 과학자들에게 도전적인 주제로 남아 있다.[193]

인간이 사용할 수 있는 잠재력
