민주당 전국위원회 위원장 선거는 2017년 2월 25일 애틀랜타 웨스틴 피치트리 플라자 호텔에서 열려 차기 민주당 전국위원회(DNC) 위원장을 결정했다.[1][2][3]1985년 이후 처음으로 치러진 DNC 의장 선거였다.

톰 페레즈키스 엘리슨은 DNC 멤버 대다수가 선호하는 후보로 떠올랐다.다른 후보로는 샐리 보이튼 브라운, 피트 버티기그, 제이미 해리슨 미래 DNC 회장, 샘 로난, 제무 그린 등이 포함되었다.페레즈는 두 차례의 투표 끝에 의장으로 선출되었다.

배경

2016년 대선 예비경선에서 DNC 지도부가 힐러리 클린턴에게 호감을 보였다고 시사한 2016년 DNC 이메일 유출 사건에 이어 데비 워서먼 슐츠가 DNC 회장직을 사임하고 도나 브레이질(Donna Brazile)[4]이 중간계승했다.

브레이슬릿은 총선에 출마하지 않겠다고 발표했다.[5]의장을 뽑을 대통령이 없는 상황에서 1985년 이후 DNC 의장 선거는 이번이 처음이다.[6]2017년 2월 말 DNC의 윈터미팅에서 선거 자체가 실시될 예정이었지만, 선거의 절차적 명확성을 더 높이기 위해 12월에 DNC 집행위원회가 개최되었다.[1]DNC 회원 448명은 단독 투표 회원이었다.회원 중 4분의 1은 주 단위 의자와 부의장이었고, 나머지는 주 단위에서 선출되었다.의장으로 선출되기 위해서는 단순 과반수의 표가 필요했다.[7]

  • 2016년 7월 28일 – 데비 와서먼 슐츠 민주당 전국위원회 위원장직 사퇴, 도나 브라질 임시위원장 임명
  • 12월 중순 – 민주당 전국위원회 집행위원회 회의.
  • 2017년 2월 23~26일 – DNC의 윈터미팅에서[1] 당원 투표자에 의해 실시되는 선거(2017년 3월 31일 이전에 실시되어야 함)
    • 2017년 2월 25일 오후 2시 28분 – 1차 투표 종료:톰 페레즈는 213.5표, 키스 엘리슨은 200표(1차 투표에서 승리하는데 필요한 214.5표)를 받았다.[8]
    • 2017년 2월 25일 오후 3시 20분 – 톰 페레즈는 2차 투표를 거쳐 DNC 의장으로 선출된다.페레즈는 만장일치 음성투표로 가결된 키스 엘리슨의 DNC 부의장 선출 동의를 냈다.

후보

2005년부터 2009년까지 DNC 의장을 지낸 하워드 딘버몬트 주지사50대 국가전략으로의 복귀를 촉구하며 11월 10일 출마를 선언했다.[9]딘은 분열된 경주의 가능성을 거론하며 12월 2일 자신의 생각을 철회했다.[10]

키스 엘리슨 미네소타 제5의회 하원의원이 11월 14일 출마를 선언했다.[11]이날 제이미 해리슨 사우스캐롤라이나 민주당 대표도 자신을 후보자로 선언했다.[12]레이먼드 버클리 뉴햄프셔 민주당 대표가 29일 출마를 선언했다.[13]2016년 12월 16일, 아이다호 민주당의 샐리 보이튼 브라운 전무가 입후보를 발표했다.[14]

엘리슨은 DNC 회원들과 만난 뒤 12월 7일 DNC 의장으로 선출되면 하원 의원직을 사퇴하겠다고 밝혀 업무에 총력을 기울일 수 있도록 했다.[15]일주일 뒤 토마스 페레즈 노동부 장관이 출마를 선언했다.[16]2월 1일, 조 바이든 전 부통령은 공개적으로 페레즈에 대한 지지를 표명했다.[17]사우스벤드, 인디아나 시장 피트 버티기그는 2017년 1월 5일 대선 출마를 선언했다.[18]폭스뉴스 애널리스트 제무 그린은 2017년 1월 12일 대선 출마를 선언했다.[19]

DNC의 투표권자가 447명인 만큼 의장직을 차지하기 위해서는 224표가 필요할 것으로 예상됐다.[136]그러나 1차 투표에서는 427명(의장 도나 브레이질 등 2명이 투표하지 않았고, 1명은 기권)에 그쳐 승부의 문턱에 도달하기 위해서는 214.5표에 그쳤다.1차 투표에서 페레즈는 213.5표를 얻었고 엘리슨은 200표, 보이튼 브라운은 12표, 부티기는 1표, 그린은 0.5표를 받았다.[34][a]

1차전이 끝난 후 그린은 중퇴해 페레즈를 지지했고, 페카스키와 로난은 중퇴해 엘리슨을 지지했다.Boynton Brown은 후보를 지지하지 않고 철수했다.2차 투표에서는 톰 페레즈 235표, 키스 엘리슨 200표 등 435표가 몰렸다.[137]페레즈가 승리한 후 엘리슨을 부의장으로 선출했다.[138]
