2001년 인도 인구 조사는 1871년 이후 10년마다 인도에서 열린 일련의 검열에서 14번째였다.[1]
인도의 인구는 남자 532,223,090명, 여자 496,514,346명으로 1,028,737,436명으로 집계되었다.[2] 총인구는 1823만10397명으로 1991년 인구조사 당시 집계된 84만642만7039명보다 21.5% 늘었다.[2]
종교 인구통계
힌두교도는 82.75 크로어(80.45%)로, 무슬림들은 2001년 인구조사에서 13.8 크로어(13.4%)로 나타났다.[3][4] 2001년 인구 조사에서는 인도에서 '다른 종교와 설득'(ORP)의 우두머리 아래 108개의 신앙이 나타났다.[5] 70만 명이 종교를 밝히지 않았다.[6]

언어 인구통계
힌디는 인도 북부에서 가장 널리 쓰이는 언어다. 인도의 인구 조사는 "힌디어"를 다양한 종류의 "힌디어"로 가능한 가장 광범위한 정의를 취한다. 2001년 인구조사에 따르면 인도 인구의 53.6%가 힌디를 알고 있으며, 이 중 41%가 힌디를 모국어 또는 모국어로 선언하였다.[7][8][9] 2001년 인구조사에서 영어는 12.18%의 인도인에게 알려져 있다. 인도의 이중언어 사용자 수는 25.50명으로 2001년 인구의 24.8%에 달한다.[10] 인도(780개)는 파푸아뉴기니(839개)에 이어 세계에서 두 번째로 많은 언어를 보유하고 있다.[11]
