공식적으로 XX의 게임으로 알려진 1984년 하계 올림픽III 올림피아드는 7월 28일부터 8월 12일까지 미국 캘리포니아 주 로스앤젤레스에서 열린 여름 복합 스포츠 행사였다.총 140개국 6829명의 선수가 21개 종목 221개 종목에 참가했다.[1][2]
전체적으로 47개국이 최소 1개의 메달을 받았고, 그 중 25개국이 최소 1개의 금메달을 땄다.개최국 미국에서 온 선수들이 174개로 가장 많은 메달을 획득했고 83개로 가장 많은 금메달을 획득했다.[3][4]전자의 기록은 1904년판 이후 그 나라의 종합 메달 집계 중 가장 큰 것이었다. 후자의 기록은 단일 대회 최다 금메달 기록이었고 주최국으로는 가장 많은 기록이었다.[5][6][a]미국이 금메달과 전체 메달 모두에서 메달 집계를 주도한 것은 1968년 이후 처음이다.[7]많은 작가와 스포츠 해설가들은 불매운동으로 인한 소련과 다른 여러 동구권 국가들의 부재가 미국에 매우 치우친 메달 결과에 기여했다고 언급했다.[5]루마니아는 역대 두 번째로 많은 금메달(20개)과 세 번째로 많은 총 메달(53개)을 따내며 역대 최다 메달 집계를 기록했다.[8][9][10]서독은 금메달이 17개로 3위, 총 메달은 59개로 2위를 차지했다.[8][7]
칼 루이스와 체조선수 에카테리나 사보는 각각 4개로 이 경기에서 가장 많은 금메달을 땄다.[11]체조선수 리닝이 종합 6개의 메달을 따내며 종합 최다 메달을 획득했다.[12]모로코와 포르투갈이 올림픽 첫 금메달을 땄다.[13][14]알제리, 도미니카 공화국, 아이보리 코스트, 시리아, 잠비아는 자국 최초의 올림픽 메달을 땄다.[15][16][17][18][19]
메달 집계
메달표는 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)가 제공한 정보를 바탕으로 발행된 메달 집계에서 IOC 협약과 일치한다.기본적으로 이 표는 한 국가 출신 선수들이 획득한 금메달 수에 의해 주문되며, 각 국가는 국가올림픽위원회(NOC)로 대표되는 단체다.은메달의 개수를 다음으로, 동메달의 개수를 고려한다.
권투와 유도 종목에서는 체급별로 동메달 2개가 수여된다.[26][27]여자 울퉁불퉁한 막대,[28] 여자 밸런스빔,[29] 남자 링 체조 종목에서 1위 타이에 금메달 2개(은메달 없음)가 수여됐다.[30]남자 도마 체조 경기에서 은메달 4개(동메달 없음)가 수여되었다.[31]여자 100m 허들과 남자 장대높이뛰기 대회에서 모두 3위 동메달 2개가 수여됐다.[32][33]
